An extension of my earlier Young American work, in which I connect deeply and closely with the social landscape of downtown New York—people I admired, was inspired by, and to me held hope during a dark time for me in the United States—New York New York is about my becoming more confident in my existence in New York City. I am no longer undocumented. I step back further with my camera to entwine portraiture and environment, or place—to make the two inseparable. It is almost a direct parallel with my Live for the Weather (2005-11, 2017) work in the Czech Republic. It is about the feeling of youth, the feeling of freedom.
