Marie Tomanova

Born in former Czechoslovakia, Marie Tomanova grew up in a small border town in South Moravia. She received BFA in Studio Art from Masaryk University in 2007 and MFA in Painting from Faculty of Fine Arts at University of Technology, Czech Republic in 2010. After finishing her studies she left to United States and currently lives and works in NYC. Her work has changed dramatically in approach, mediums, and themes.

Tomanova's photography and video work deals with issues of displacement, identity, inclusivity, gender, sexuality and memory. Her ongoing series of Self-portraits (2014-) address the idea of displacement and finding her place in the American landscape. Young American (2015-), first presented as a solo exhibition at Czech Center New York in 2018, focuses on individuality, identity, and belonging in the American social landscape. Her latest body of work, It Was Once My Universe (2018-), is an ongoing, deeply personal project about her returning home to the Czech Republic after 8 years away. It was shown as part of her 2020 solo show by the same name at 35m2 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Paradigm Publishing published her first monograph Young American, with introduction by photographer Ryan McGinley and essay by art historian Thomas Beachdel in March 2019. A documentary following Marie’s journey is in making by Academy Award (student) winning Czech director Marie Dvořáková.

Tomanova has shown her work at exhibitions at C24 Gallery (NYC), SPRING/BREAK Art Show (NYC), SO1 Gallery, Tokyo (JP), 35m2 (Czech Rep.), Pragovka Gallery (Czech Rep.), Museum of Modern Art, Tbilisi (Georgia), A.I.R. Gallery (NYC), Museum Of Sex (NYC), Czech Center New York (NYC), EEP Berlin, (Germany), Ars Gallery (Czech Rep.), Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Ana, USA), Print Center (Philadelphia, USA), Osmos Station (Stamford, USA), among others.

She curated Youth Explosion: The New Bohemia (2016) and co-curated Baby, I Like It Raw: Post-Eastern Bloc Photography and Video (2017), and MUSE MUSE exhibitions for Czech Center New York. She co-curated The Future Is Female for #SAVEARTSPACE public art installation in New York City (2017) and sits on the board for The New Bohemia Open Call for Czech Center New York (2017).
